It feels like I am harping on about providing a great mobile experience in every article I post but that’s because it is now so incredibly important.

This year, mobile browsing surpassed desktop for the first time. As far as SEO is concerned, we know that Google have been penalising websites that are causing errors for mobile users.

The time to re-evaluate your mobile experience is now. If you can deliver a high quality mobile experience for your brand you will be ahead of the game in terms of driving up your SEO for mobile which is where you need to be.

If you are serious about driving up your SEO this new year, then get serious about implementing a great mobile experience. The best part is that lots of businesses are way behind on this so you have a unique opportunity to trump your competitors if you act fast.

2. It’s Not All About The Links

Links have historically been the way that you increase your position on Google. A link back to your website should show that someone has given your article or business a vote in confidence. But thanks to spammers abusing the system the link has caused Google a whole heap of trouble.

The latest SEO reports tell us that Google seem to be placing more emphasis on brand mentions and citations instead of just links. This basically means mentioning a brand on a website without actually linking back to the website.

Of course, the source of these brand mentions will be important with more authoritative sites giving greater results. Which leads me nicely to point number three…

3. Creating Content and Thought Leadership

If you solely focus on SEO without putting a strong content system in place then you will not be successful.

Your content strategy and your SEO strategy need to be linked up. So your content creation should be keyword optimised, and you should also be creating relationships with authority sites and publications to further build your organic reach. Make sure that this is all integrated with your social media channels too.

Negative SEO

We have discussed before how spammy links can damage your SEO. That’s why it’s so important to pick a company who don’t use bad SEO techniques to build links. But some spammers are taking this even further with what’s known as negative SEO. This is when a person builds thousands of spammy links and then points them at your website. This then makes you look bad to Google and your website will be penalised. This is already a problem and it just shows you the importance of being careful with the digital marketing company that you pick. SEO takes time to build and if someone promises you the sun, moon and stars then be very careful they are not going to use black hat techniques to get you there – you will be penalised.
