Facebook Ad Targeting – What It Is And Why You Should Care

If your business is B2C then I have some good news for you. Right now, Facebook advertising costs are some of the lowest in the industry. For example, you can easily end up paying below 10c for an engagement.

Facebook is the second most used website after Google. It’s definitely worth trying out for your business.

As with any online advertising campaign, run some low budget tests first to suss out what works. Once you have figured out what works, you can amp it up.

One of the most exciting things about Facebook advertising is how targeted it can be. Below are some samples of some basic Facebook Ad targeting.

Do any of these targeting options suit your demographic?

As you can see, in each of the targeting options above, you also get an estimated number of people your advert will reach.  Facebook Ad Targeting is ideal if you have a good idea of your different buyer personas.

Think about it, people tell Facebook a lot of personal information. If you have a good knowledge of your ideal customer, then Facebook is a really useful tool for your business.

These just scratch the surface of your Facebook Ad Targeting options. Here are some other targeting options you could be harnessing:

Pinpoint the exact location you want your ads to be shown in. This is particularly useful if you are a local business. Another way this is useful is if you export. You can target your Adverts to different countries and different languages.

If your business is mostly focused on one gender, like say, a bridal boutique, you can run your ads only to that particular gender.

Likes and Interests

This is where you can get super targeted. If you have a comprehensive buyer persona now is the time to bring it out. You can show your Ads to people who like a particular type of movie, style of music, book or even T.V show – the list of options here is fairly vast.

So for example, if your customers are females with a penchant for action movies, Zumba and barbecue then you would add that information here.

This one is pretty self explanatory, you can choose to show your ads to a limited age group or a broad one.

Relationship status

You can choose to target people who are in a relationship or single. This and many more options are available by selecting the ‘more demographics’ button. As you can see from the image below this gives you lots more options including Education and Work.

This section allows you to hone in on the browser or mobile device your ideal customer uses. This is perfect if you are selling an app or software. You can also target console gamers and page admins.

Under this section you will also find travel. If your business is in the travel industry you can pick people planning to travel to a specific country, or who have just returned from a holiday a few weeks ago.
